The first-ever online summit of the #ChildrenoftheNileInitiative was successfully held today, September 6, 2025, under the unifying theme: “Building an Academic Bridge across 11 Nations: Knowledge, Cooperation and a Shared Future for the Nile.”
The landmark virtual event brought together academic leaders, researchers, and stakeholders from across the Nile Basin to chart a new course for structured educational and scientific collaboration. Jimma University (JU) played a leading role, serving as a co-organizer and co-leader of one of the summit’s five core working groups, the Universities & Research Group.

In his keynote address, Dr. Jemal Abafita ,Jimma University president highlighted the deep-rooted, yet often unrecognized, collaborations already flourishing among Nile Basin institutions. These include vibrant student exchange programs, joint research publications on critical issues like transboundary water management, and collaborative projects delivering tangible benefits to communities throughout the region.
The speech emphasized the critical need to evolve from these isolated successes into a coordinated, basin-wide strategy. Jimma University reaffirmed its full commitment to this vision, outlining a three-pillar framework to deepen academic ties:
1. Strengthening the Science of Shared Resources: By coordinating larger, basin-wide research consortia focused on critical challenges such as sediment flow, watershed management, and renewable energy.
2. Launching a Platform for Knowledge Management: Leveraging existing ICT capacity to build a “Nile Basin Knowledge Platform”—a shared digital hub for data, modeling, and virtual collaboration to empower all current and future projects.
3. Deepening the Scholarship of Sustainability: Advancing research in environmental and social stewardship to ensure development in the Basin is both inclusive and guided by science.
A central and compelling proposal from the summit was the call for the formal establishment of a Nile Basin University & Research Fund. This fund is envisioned as the engine to transform partnerships into a resilient network that builds trust, generates shared benefits, and fosters peace through academic cooperation.
The outcomes of the summit are expected to be formalized in a declaration, which will also include messages of solidarity from the academic community for the upcoming inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
We are in the community!!!
