Existing Cooperation and Networking Activities

The Environmental Health Program relies heavily on cooperation and internationalization to address environmental health challenges that transcend national borders. International cooperation enables the department to map and share knowledge, expertise, and resources, accelerating the development of effective environmental health policies and interventions. This cooperation takes many forms, including multilateral agreements (the collaboration between four Ethiopian Universities and Belgian universities through the VLIR-UOS IQ-GEAR project where Environmental health is one of the departments involved in capacity building training, bilateral agreements, regional organizations, and international organizations.

Academic Partnerships:

JU’s Environmental Health Sciences and Technology department greatly benefited from these collaborations by gaining access to international funding, research opportunities, and knowledge sharing. Through collaboration, the department established relationships with international organizations, and other national academic institutions, increasing its visibility and reputation, and attracting students, faculty, and researchers. By participating in international collaborations, the department contributed to addressing global environmental health challenges, enhanced its research capabilities, and improved its teaching quality.

Industry and NGO Collaborations:

Our Department collaborates with environmental agencies and NGOs, such as Ethiopian Federal, Regional, Zonal and District Environment, Forest and Climate Change to provide students with internships and practical training opportunities. We also collaborate with industry partners, like Abattoirs, Sanitary Landfills, Drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, Industrial parks, to address real-world environmental health issues, including air and water pollution and climate change. These partnerships enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems, develop professional networks, and contribute to evidence-based solutions.

Conferences and Workshops:

  • Hosting and participating in international conferences to share research and innovations.
  • Regular workshops and seminars with guest speakers from around the world.

 

Experiences and Structures for Regional and International Students

The Environment health Sciences and Technology department has a strong commitment to internationalization, recognizing the importance of diversity and global perspectives in the field of Environmental Health. Our department has established a range of structures and experiences to support regional and international students, including international student exchange programs with Belgium, Norway, Rostock University, Germany, international research collaborations. Such initiatives have attracted international students from Nigeria, Sudan & South Sudan in the context of Intra-Africa Mobility Scheme. By providing these structures and experiences, our department prepares students for careers in environmental health that address global challenges.
