1. Admission Requirements for Doctoral Program
1.1. Admission Period
Admission to a Doctoral program can take place twice (first /Second Semester) in an Ethiopian academic calendar. Admission Requirements
A candidate applying for a Doctoral program should:
- Candidates who have successfully completed their Master’s degree in the field of Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Public Health, and others related fields (Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, etc.) and recommended by the supervisory committee of the department AND,
- provide recommendation letters from two academic referee or from his/her organization, a motivation letter, and a Doctoral research concept paper AND,
- have a CGPA of 3.00 or higher and a masters’ thesis rated as ‘good’ or higher or equivalent a AND,
- provide a signed sponsorship letter if sponsored by an organization or provide a proof of financial capability for the educational payments if self-sponsored AND,
- present a concept paper to the DGC followed by an interview and entrance examination based on the requirements stipulated in the curriculum AND,
- An applicant whose medium of instruction of previous studies is not in English, should bear a minimum of 6.0 in IELTS or equivalent TOFL result.

*For admission into doctoral programs without coursework, two publications in reputable journal is a minimum requirement (i.e., two publication 5%, and 3 and above numbers of publication 10%).
1.2. Admission procedures
- Announcement for applicant will be made through advertisement by the university registrar two months ahead of date of admission
- The applications along with the necessary documents shall be submitted to the university registrar office.
- The assessment of the applications for admission to the program shall be made by the Department Graduate Council (DGC) and must ensure the assignment of a doctoral supervisor for successful candidates.
- The admission of successful candidates will be endorsed by academic commission of the respective college/institute/and the university registrar or its delegate shall grant the student an admission letter (Appendix 1)
- The candidate must have a Doctoral supervisor before registering formally by following the university registration procedures on date specified by the university registrar.
- Registration period of students from other doctoral program modalities such as joint/dual degree programs, sandwich programs and GKEN may be flexibly entertained depending on the candidate’s visit to the partner Institution and other unforeseen administrative difficulty.
2. Duration of the Program
- The duration of the time required for the completion of a Doctoral program is four years.
- With a justifiable reason and with the recommendation of the supervisor(s), extension can be allowed for an additional period of two years.
The duration for Doctoral coursework shall be one academic year with a maximum extension of six month for course intensive programs with comprehensive qualifying examination.
