Background
Established in 1988, the Department of Environmental Health Science and Technology at Jimma University is a venerable institution with a rich legacy. Over the years, it has nurtured a talented pool of professionals, conferring diplomas in Sanitary Science to approximately 520 students, and Bachelor of Science degrees in Environmental Health Science to around 2500 students through regular, evening, and distance programs. Additionally, the department has awarded Master of Science degrees in Environmental Health and Environmental Science & Technology to about 250 students, as well as PhD degrees in Applied Ecology and Environmental Health to nearly 20 students.
Notably, the department has discontinued its diploma program in Sanitary Science and distance education programs. However, it continues to spearhead environmental health research, tackling critical environmental and public health issues at the national level. The department’s research and consultancy efforts are centered on several key thematic areas, which will be outlined below.

Rationale
Jimma University’s Environmental Health program has a long-standing commitment to producing high-caliber professionals at the bachelor’s degree level. With many universities now offering similar training, our program aims to contribute to the achievement of our country’s primary health care policy goals by providing quality education at multiple institutions. Furthermore, our MSc and PhD programs will equip candidates to drive research, policy design, and implementation in Environmental Health, Science, Technology, and Ecology. By offering these training programs, we will also create additional career opportunities in the fields of Environmental Health and Ecology, ultimately enhancing the sector’s human capital and expertise.

Our goal is to be recognized as a leader in this field, both nationally and globally, by 2027. To achieve this, we have set a bold strategic direction: to transform ourselves into a world-class Environmental Health Training and Research Institute, renowned for its innovative approaches, cutting-edge research, and exceptional academic programs. Over the next five years, we will work tirelessly to realize this vision, driving positive change and shaping the future of environmental health.
Management structure in the department
The Department of Environmental Health at JU operates under a well-defined management structure, which ensures efficient decision-making and effective implementation of its academic and research programs. The department is led by a Head, who provides overall strategic direction and oversight. Supporting the Head are three Program Coordinators, responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, respectively. These coordinators are appointed in consultation with the Department Council, ensuring a collaborative approach to academic program management. Additionally, the department benefits from a Doctoral Council, comprising all PhD holders in Environmental Health Science and Technology, which provides expert guidance and mentorship to doctoral students. Furthermore, the Head appoints Laboratory Unit Management Heads, who oversee the day-to-day operations of the department’s laboratory facilities. This management structure enables the department to function efficiently, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
Services
In addition to our commitment to community service through the JU-CBE program, our department offers a range of specialized services to the Jimma Zone community. These include:
- Water and food quality testing, in collaboration with the Zonal Health Departments and the Municipality, to ensure public health and safety.
- Technical support in integrated waste management, providing expertise to promote sustainable waste management practices in the region.
Our laboratory facilities are also open to students from other departments within Jimma University, as well as universities across Ethiopia, providing access to state-of-the-art equipment and expertise.
Furthermore, our department offers consultancy services to hotels, commercial centers, and industries, providing bespoke solutions to specific challenges and opportunities. Our experts are available to provide tailored support and guidance upon request.
