Medicine and Health officer Coordinating Office Programs

Our office oversees the administration and academic coordination of the following most important undergraduate degree programs:

→ Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MD)

Duration: 6 and half Years (Including Internship Year)

Program Overview: This is a comprehensive program designed to train competent general       practitioners. It follows a unique Community-Oriented, Problem-Based Learning curriculum.

Phases:

Pre-clinical Phase (Years 1-2): Integrated study of basic physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, pathology integrated together with problem based learning sessions and community trainings.

Clinical Phase (Years 3-5): Rotations in major clinical disciplines (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, etc.) at Jimma University Medical Center.

Community-Based Training: Embedded throughout, with dedicated blocks in rural and urban health centers.

Internship (Year 6): A mandatory rotating internship to attain full licensure.

→ Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSc in Public Health)

Duration of the training: Four years

Program Overview: This is an integrated program designed to train competent, compassionate, and ethical Public Health professionals who deliver promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative services.  It implements a competency-based, problem-based learning, student-centered, and community-oriented curriculum.

Phases:

Pre-clinical Phase (Years 1-2): During the first two years, students engage in an integrated study of fundamental anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, parasitology, and pharmacology, integrated with problem-based learning and community-oriented training.  Public health courses are also delivered in this phase.

Community-Based Training: Embedded throughout the program. This approach integrates the community into learning, making education relevant by addressing real societal needs, fostering practical skills, and promoting social accountability through collaborative problem-solving, research, and service projects.

Clinical Phase (Years 3): Students undergo major clinical attachment at Jimma University Medical Center (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, etc.)

Clinical internship (Year 4):  Students practice what they have learned in their previous years, enabling them to gain additional knowledge, skills, experience, and confidence for their future professional careers.
