The School of Medicine at Jimma University is a cornerstone of the university’s commitment to producing competent, compassionate, and community-oriented healthcare professionals. The department plays a pivotal role in advancing medical education, clinical service, and research aligned with Ethiopia’s national health priorities.
The program is designed to train Health Officers with a strong foundation in clinical medicine, public health, and preventive care. Through an integrated, problem-based, and community-oriented curriculum, students acquire the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes required to diagnose, manage, and prevent common diseases affecting individuals and communities.
A unique feature of the department is its emphasis on the Community-Based Education (CBE) approach, which allows students to engage directly with rural and underserved populations. This experiential learning strategy ensures graduates are well-prepared to address real-world health challenges, particularly in resource-limited settings.
The department is supported by experienced academic staff, modern teaching methodologies, and strong affiliations with teaching hospitals, including Jimma University Medical Center. These resources provide students with extensive hands-on clinical training across various specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.
In addition to undergraduate training, the department actively promotes research, innovation, and continuous professional development, contributing to evidence-based practice and health system strengthening. Faculty and students are engaged in research addressing priority health issues, including infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and emerging public health concerns.
