School of Medical Laboratory Sciences
A school of medical laboratory sciences was established in the former Jimma institute of health science (JIHS) in1988 G.C. The first initiative was to enroll students at a diploma level according to the criteria set by the then Commission for Higher Education. In 1998 G.C the school launched post basic BSc training Program in medical laboratory technology which enabled selected laboratory technology diploma graduates to pursue their first degree in medical laboratory technology and assume different positions including teaching. In 2002 GC again by the directives from the ministry of education, the school launched Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) degree program for generic students. The diploma and post basic BSc programs were terminated in 2003 and 2006 GC, respectively. Beside these regular programs, the school of medical laboratory Sciences has started training degree programs in medical laboratory Science in the evening category in 2007 GC and post basic summer degree programs in medical laboratory Science in 2006. Following the successful establishment of the undergraduate program, the School of medical laboratory Sciences saw the need for graduate studies various specialties. Apart from the regular and evening under graduate medical laboratory science programs, currently the School is running Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, Clinical Laboratory sciences specialty in Hematology and Immunohematology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences specialty in Laboratory Management masters programs. The Department has Two PhD programs. These are PhD in Medical Microbiology and PhD in Tropical and infectious disease PhD program. The School consists of five course teams; Medial Microbiology, Medical parasitology, Hematology and Immunohematology, Clinical Chemistry, and Immunology and Molecular Biology. These course teams are proposed to be upgraded to departments’ level.

- MLS PEO 1: Professional Competence & Ethics Graduates will demonstrate the necessary knowledge, technical skills, and professional and ethical attributes required of a competent Medical Laboratory Scientist.
- MLS PEO 2: Diverse Career Success Graduates will successfully pursue careers in a wide variety of settings, including clinical and public health laboratories, higher education institutions, research and development, and healthcare management or sales.
- MLS PEO 3: Regulatory Compliance & Communication Graduates will adhere to all international and governmental standards, regulations, and safety guidelines to ensure the welfare of the community and the environment, while demonstrating effective communication through diverse media.
- MLS PEO 4: Lifelong Learning & Advancement Graduates will engage in continuous professional growth by pursuing advanced studies, specialized certifications, and career advancement in medical laboratory sciences and related fields.
