Educators and representatives of higher education institutions and civil society organizations from Africa, the Middle East and Europe, including Jimma University, participated in a three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) held at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Linz, Austria, under the MANDELA Multilateralism through Negotiation and Cultural Diplomacy Education in the Levant and Africa project.
Participants from Austria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Israel, Hungary and Romania engaged in an intensive intercultural learning experience focused on strengthening educators capacity in dialogue, negotiation, conflict transformation and peace building. The training introduced and demonstrated four innovative MANDELA pedagogical approachesCultural Diplomacy, Co-Power, Values and Knowledge Education (VaKE), and Game Changersthrough interactive, learner-centered and experiential activities.
Participants exchanged experiences from diverse cultural and institutional contexts and explored practical ways of addressing stereotypes, cultural misunderstandings and differences while developing learners skills in respectful communication, negotiation and peaceful conflict transformation.
The Training of Trainers further equipped participants to become trainers, facilitators and change agents within their respective institutions by developing their capacity to apply and disseminate the MANDELA approaches in teaching, curriculum development and institutional activities. The approaches can be integrated into a wide range of disciplines, including communication, journalism, education, social sciences, humanities, languages, international relations, and peace and conflict studies.
For Jimma University, the training provides an important opportunity to strengthen intercultural education and integrate innovative approaches to dialogue, negotiation and conflict transformation into academic programs.
