Consultative Workshop on the Journey Towards National Accreditation for Academic Programs

A one-day consultative workshop focused on the journey toward national accreditation for Jimma University’s academic programs was held, attended by researchers, academic staff, and university officials.
One of the main objectives of the workshop was to bring the task of program accreditation to the forefront, ensuring program relevance and quality at both national and international levels.
The session aimed to develop a common understanding of the complementary reform initiatives, align program reviews for accreditation with the differentiation outlined in Jimma University’s 2017 EC plan, and gain a clear understanding of KPI cascading at the operational levels, focusing on program emphasis and the program ratio for research universities as indicated in the performance contract agreement.
The workshop was welcomed by Jimma University’s President, Dr. Jemal Abbafita, and the Academic Vice President, Dr. Tadesse Habtamu.
In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Jemal Abbafita highlighted that Jimma University is one of the designated research universities in Ethiopia and is currently undergoing two reform initiatives: differentiation and institutional autonomy.
He added that to implement these major reforms in the 2017 EC fiscal year, various specific strategies and aligned activities with measurable key performance indicators (KPIs) have been established.
Dr. Jemal emphasized that, from the perspective of institutional autonomy, different task forces are working on developing institutional charter legislation and reviewing existing strategic plans to fit Jimma University’s reform agendas.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Tadesse Habtamu, Academic Vice President of Jimma University, stressed that the workshop provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of cascading and implementing academic-related reform initiatives.
He highlighted the significance of the workshop in helping participants gain valuable insights and prepare for the implementation of these major tasks in the remaining months of the 2017 EC fiscal year.
The workshop included presentations and discussions on differentiation, institutional autonomy, effective resource utilization, cascading programs, and related issues.
