Objectives of the program
The aim of this postgraduate study is to develop, quantify and apply theoretical and practical models for developmental issues; and to develop long-term strategies, operational targets and concrete plans for sustainable economic development. The courses designed under the program provide knowledge about development theories and technical economic applications through advanced courses.
Admission Requirements
The applicant must have completed BA/BSc degree or equivalent accredited from HERQA in Economics, Development Economics, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resources Economics, Environmental Economics, and Statistics. Variety of basic economic knowledge is required for successful completion of the program. Hence, applicants who have completed their undergraduate study in Economics and the aforementioned disciplines can join the program. Since strong Economics background is required, the applicants will be asked to write entrance examination. Besides, students may be required to document their English language proficiency when deemed necessary.
Graduate profile
After a successful completion of the program, graduates of the program are believed to be engaged in the following tasks:
- Conduct Scientific Research and development activities and can work in research Institutions.
- Work as instructors in higher education institutions.
- Give Consultancy Services.
- Can be employed in government, non-governmental, and private organizations to work planning and economic analysis works.
- Can start their own business.
Duration of the Program
The study program is designed to be completed in two years, four semesters. During the first semester, students will be exposed to various advanced theories and applications in economics; in the second semester, they will be introduced to their field of specialization. In the third semester, students will be attached to Development Team Training Program (DTTP) that helps them relate the theoretical knowledge they acquire in class with the real world. Besides that, students are engaged in proposal development for their graduation thesis. In the last semester, the students will conduct scientific research and produce research output that has strong significance for the development of the nation.

Graduation Requirement
- A minimum of 40 credit hours.
- Minimum of CGPA of 3 and maximum of one C or two C+.
- Dissertation defense and Minimum of satisfactory grade in dissertation/thesis.
Degree Nomenclature
The nomenclature of the degree award for Development Economics will be “Master of Science in Development Economics”. In Amharic:“የሳይንስማስትሬትዲግሪበስነ–ልማትኢኮኖሚክስ”.
