About Climate Change and Environment Research Center (CCERC)
The Climate Change and Environment Research Center (CCERC) at Jimma University is established to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time—climate change and its wide-ranging impacts on ecosystems, livelihoods, and human health. Ethiopia, among the most climate-vulnerable nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, faces recurring droughts, floods, soil erosion, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, and climate-sensitive diseases. These challenges are further intensified by rapid population growth, land degradation, urbanization, and heavy reliance on rain-fed agriculture, leaving many communities vulnerable.
Recognizing these realities, Jimma University established the CCERC as a dedicated hub for climate and environmental research, innovation, and policy and community engagement. The Center aims to generate robust scientific evidence, design and test innovative technologies, foster multidisciplinary collaboration, and inform evidence-based decision-making at national and regional levels.
The strategic plan of the center outlines the Center’s vision, mission, core values, goals and strategic priorities, guiding its transformation into a leading academic and research institution in climate and environmental studies in Ethiopia and beyond. The research agenda integrates climate change with public health, agriculture, environment, technology, and social sciences, promoting holistic and cross-sectoral solutions.
CCERC places strong emphasis on partnerships, capacity building, and community engagement. By leveraging Jimma University’s strong reputation and broad network, the Center seeks to mobilize resources, attract local and international collaborations, and showcase scalable solutions for resilience and sustainability.
By 2030, CCERC aspires to be a recognized leader in climate and environmental research and a key contributor to Ethiopia’s Climate-Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
