Biochar-based biofertilzers innovations at Africa Climate Summit 2 (ACS2)

Jimma University has garnered international recognition as a leader in sustainable agriculture at the Africa Climate Summit 2025, applauded for its innovative work in biochar-based biofertilizer technology. This accolade was awarded during a high-level panel discussion titled “Access to Voluntary Carbon Markets through Biochar-Based Organic Soil Amendments,” hosted by the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) at the Team Europe Pavilion. The session was inaugurated by Mrs. Silke Stallkamp, agricultural attaché at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity in the German Embassy in Ethiopia.

In front of an audience comprising policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders, Jimma University showcased its comprehensive engagement model. The university highlighted how biochar-based organic amendments can serve as a transformative solution for carbon sequestration, enhancing soil health, and creating new revenue opportunities for farmers.

In a notable recognition, Jimma University was designated as a “key multiplier” for its integrated approach, which combines technical expertise, thorough research on biochar carbon credit verification, and proactive policy engagement with national and regional agricultural entities. “This international recognition solidifies our status as a center for agricultural innovation,” stated Dr. Milkiyas Ahmed, who represented the university. “It affirms our decade-long research efforts and highlights our commitment to developing practical solutions to the climate crisis in Ethiopia and throughout Africa.” Dr. Milkiyas, accompanied by a PhD student from the university, presented their research on biochar and bone char-based soil amendments during the summit. This work is currently supported by the ETH-SOIL project.

The event attracted a diverse array of influential stakeholders, including policymakers, participants from carbon markets, NGOs, and leaders from the private sector. Other panelists included representatives from Biochar Life (Kenya), PlantVillage/Artisan-Pro (Kenya), CAoN (Namibia), NUST (Namibia), Carbon Standards International (CSI), and DBFZ (Germany
