Better Sheep, Better Life: Empowering Local Farmers for Greater Earnings

A transformative initiative at Jimma University is revolutionizing sheep farming, making it a more intelligent and profitable venture for local families. The collaboration between Jimma University and ICARDA is rooted in the principle of listening to farmers’ needs, aiming to enhance the livestock that is already well-adapted to the local environment.

The Community-Based Breeding Program (CBBP), launched in four villages of the Jimma Zone, Dedo District has seen notable success. Four groups, including a women-led cooperative, have effectively collaborated, leading to healthier flocks through the introduction of 56 new rams and regular veterinary care.

Innovative technology plays a key role, with data collectors using tablets to monitor sheep growth and connect this information to an international database, alongside improved forage crop distribution to ensure a balanced diet for the animals.

Looking ahead, the project is set to expand, offering farmers new opportunities such as sheep fattening programs in partnership with the World Bank, which will improve financial access and increase income. Enhanced reproductive techniques, including artificial insemination services, will optimize the genetic potential of top rams, further improving herds. The selection of rams will continue to be a collaborative effort between farmers and technical experts from Jimma University and ICARDA.

Additionally, the initiative will focus on developing market connections for farmers to sell their improved livestock, ensuring economic sustainability.

By distributing improved rams to neighbouring kebeles, the successful CBBP model aims to broaden its impact, enhancing livestock quality and empowering local communities for a brighter future in sheep farming.
