ASASE Hosts Forum on Emerging Aviation Technologies and Sustainability

The Aviation Sciences & Aerospace Engineering Academy (ASASE), with support from Boeing, convened a high-level forum on March 27, 2026, at the Jimma Institute of Technology (JIT) to explore the intersection of emerging aviation technologies and sustainability.

The event was officially opened by Dr. Jemal Abafita, President of Jimma University, who welcomed participants and underscored the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and industry partnerships. Professor Muluemebet Abera, Vice President for Research and Partnership, delivered a presentation on strategic research transformation at Jimma University, highlighting how academic institutions can drive impact through collaborative, solution-oriented research.

The forum brought together industry leaders, academics, and policymakers to discuss the future of aviation in emerging markets, industry-aligned research, and pathways for talent development. The program featured keynote presentations, a panel discussion, and networking sessions aimed at inspiring the next generation of aviation and aerospace engineers.

In his keynote, “The Future of Aviation in Emerging Markets: Technology, Talent, and Transformation,” Capt. Henok Guta of Ethiopian Airlines emphasized the critical role of skilled professionals in driving innovation across the sector. Capt. Solomon Gizaw, CEO of Abyssinian Flight Services & Aviation Academy, followed with a presentation on “Emerging Aviation Technologies and Sustainable Aerospace Systems,” highlighting advances in fuel efficiency, sustainable aviation fuels, and aircraft design.

Steven Gillard of Boeing provided insights into global aerospace trends and the importance of public-private partnerships in building resilient aviation ecosystems. Wabi Alemu of Ethiopian Airlines delivered a second keynote focused on practical applications of emerging technologies, while Biruck Abraham of the Aerospace Engineers Association explored “Industry-Aligned Research Opportunities: Translating Academic Innovation into Aerospace Impact,” encouraging stronger collaboration between universities and the aviation industry.

A panel discussion moderated by Pazion Chernet, CEO of Orbit Health, brought together voices from industry, academia, and policy to deliberate on strategies for sustaining growth and innovation in Ethiopia’s aviation sector.

In the afternoon, the JU Aero Students Club was officially launched, marking a new chapter for student engagement in aviation and aerospace activities at Jimma University. The club aims to provide a platform for students to explore aerospace technologies, collaborate on projects, and connect with industry professionals.

The forum was organized as part of ASASE’s ongoing efforts, supported by Boeing, to foster knowledge exchange and professional development within Ethiopia’s aviation and aerospace community.
