A New Year’s Message from the President of Jimma University

2019 E.C. Isn’t Just a New Year. It’s a New Era for Jimma University.

As we welcome the Ethiopian New Year of 2019 E.C., I extend my warmest wishes on behalf of Jimma University and myself for a year filled with joy, peace, love, and success.

This year carries special weight for us. Jimma University stands at a pivotal juncture in its institutional journey: we are among the institutions poised to transition to autonomy. This is not merely an administrative milestone it is a defining chapter that will shape our future.

To our faculty, staff, and office heads:
Over the past six years, your dedicated preparatory work has brought us to this threshold. Now, we must accelerate with innovation, accountability, and a shared sense of purpose. Let us rise above trivial differences, focus on what is strategically vital, and move forward as one team. Autonomy brings greater authority but also greater responsibility. We must prepare ourselves individually and collectively to deliver on its promise.

To our students:
You remain the very foundation of our institution. Everything we do is to empower you to become capable citizens who contribute to the peace and development of our nation and humanity. In this transition, your role matters more than ever. I call on you to embrace it fully.

To our community:
Guided by our motto “We are in the community,” we have spent decades serving society through impactful work. Going forward, we will deepen this bond building a relationship rooted in mutual benefit. As a research university, we are committed to problem-solving research that drives tangible national progress, and to strengthening university-industry linkages.

To our alumni, friends, and partners:
My deepest gratitude for your unwavering support over the years. Now, more than ever, we need your time, expertise, and solidarity. Your engagement will be decisive in making our transition to autonomy a success. I warmly invite you to play your part.

May the new year bring us all peace, health, joy, and love.
