A National Postgraduate Curriculum Review Workshop held at Jimma University

A national Postgraduate curriculum review workshop of various disciplines was held at Jimma University from 13th- 14th of July, 2017 at JUCAVM meeting Hall. A total of 21 new curricula previously drafted by the various Colleges & Institutes of JU were critically reviewed by renowned scholars from institutions in Ethiopia and abroad.
Among the 21 fields inaugurated at the workshop 8 of them are PhD, 12 MSc and 1 sub specialty programs. Some of them like L.LM in Construction Law and Management were not previously offered in Ethiopia that made JU a national pioneer of such disciplines.

Committed to demand driven health service delivery system the University inaugurated sub-specialty training programs in Gynecologic Oncology. In addition, new postgraduate programs are launched at PhD in management, PhD. In Financial economics, PhD in Industrial Economics, PhD in History,PhD in Agronomy, PhD in Horticulture, PhD in Physics, PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences and several other MA/MSc programs.

Present on the occasion and guest of Honor of the event. Professor Taye Tolemariam, V/P for Academic Affairs of JU underlined that the initiation of the new postgraduate  programs will ensure meaningful contribution of the university to the rapid growth and social transformation of the country by playing a primary supportive role in the government’s effort to improve the quality of teaching staff in universities with 60/40 proportion of MA and PHD holders respectively at the end of the GTPII period. He later on also called for high level intellectual and professional commitment of the participants and critical reviewers to enrich the draft curricula towards better quality.
The two days’ workshop was fruitful in improving the qualities of the curricula through the invaluable and constructive comments by the critical reviewers. All the participants confirmed the importance and necessity of launching such new programs given the country’s drive towards industrialization. They affirmed that such new fields would definitely support the process and JU is trailblazing as an eye opener to other similar institutions in the country.
