Internationalization strategy

Jimma University has been following the strategic approach of internationalization for the last two years, and recently internationalization was designated as the key milestone of the newly devised Five Years Strategic Plan of the university  that will be operational from 2015/16 – 2019/20.  The Plan highlights that JU is functioning in a competitive global environment with ample opportunities for Jimma University if they are utilized and approached in a proper manner. Exposing staff members and students to changing global trends and developments has been emphasized to enable them to participate in the dynamic global scientific environment and ensure their competitiveness in the global employment market.

The plan aspires to enhance internationalization in academics and research through the internationalization of its curriculum and in meeting global quality standard measures such as ISO 9000. It is also stated in the Plan that the university must extend the horizons of joint research projects with overseas partners and expand access to resources for conducting high quality researches. A significant part of this initiative will be through the production of grant winning research proposals with interested global partners.

Attracting and retaining highly competent international faculty and students has emerged as one of the main pillars in the internationalization strategy of the university. This has been underlined in terms of developing and implementing academic policies that fits international standards, providing services and facilities of global standards, creating a conducive campus environment and sorting out diversified funding for the internationalization of programs.

Strengthening international partnership in research and education is emphasized as one of the core areas of the strategy. This will be done through institutional development by establishing effective organizational structure and leadership. Initiating collaboration with renowned international partners to support staff and students mobility is also mentioned as a major driver of extensive partnerships with international actors.
